Connected by stillness
by Edinburgh artist Mike Heseltine.
Connected by stillness.
When my mind becomes still, I no longer feel such a strong sense of self. It is replaced by an awareness of a more universal consciousness. A deep feeling of connection with all things. Thoughts are gently replaced with an awareness of the present moment. The world of form is replaced by an awareness of the formless.
The stillness of a tomb, triggers in me this awareness of the formless. The illusion of self fades away, like the carved words and the stone features on the tomb itself.
In the painting, the two figures have a sense of self, as they live in the world of form. They also have an awareness of 'no self' and the formless, which unites them. Death is the transition from Form to Formless and I think can be experienced at any time through the letting go of all concept of 'self'. In so doing, death is seen not as an end, and no longer to be feared. As Eckhart Tolle writes..."The secret of life is to die before you die and find that there is no death."
