Self is just another thought
The existence of the self is not just common sense but now supported by the latest research and theories in cognitive neuroscience. A sense of self is crucial for us to be able to navigate this world and can have significant effects on mental health and moral reasoning. It allows us to make value based decisions and connect meaningfully with others. But is this sense of self the same as our soul? Something that is permanent and can transcend death?
The Buddha famously avoided answering the question 'is there a self?'. Instead he talked about 'no self' (anattā or anātman) which is that there is no unchanging, permanent self or essence found in any phenomenon.
My understanding is that this idea of a 'self' is a construct created by our thoughts to help us live our lives. The construct is based upon filtered information, interpreted by our senses and presented as 'reality'. But reality is so much more than we perceive, thus our sense of self is an illusion, all be it a useful one.
I read an interesting analogy... ".... think of yourself as a droplet of water that always returns to the sea. Once you merge with the sea, you cannot be distinguished from the rest of the ocean. And when you are again separated from the ocean, you will not be exactly the same drop as before." I think that by being aware that our sense of self is just an ever changing thought, we begin to see ourselves from the ocean or from a universal awareness of 'no self'.
