Letting go of delusion
I've represented thoughts as the phases of the moon. They are moments in time that appear and then fade away. I create a sense of self from these thoughts, fashioned by culture, education, experience and the need to interact and navigate this world. It is a useful delusion and an identity created by my ego, but my true identity is the consciousness that notices my thoughts. It is the awareness beyond human definition and limitations.
"I am that I am" is a declaration from God to Moses in the Bible (Exodus 3:14) which signifies God's eternal nature and unchanging presence. By using the words, 'I am', there is no observer and observed. There is just one consciousness that knows itself. It is always present beneath the layers of identity created by our thoughts. It was present before birth and is present after death. We are the eternal 'I'.
