Empty of a self.
Empty of self connects us. The 'self' identifies as a separate and individual form not subject to change or impermanence. Our sense of self is very constant. Perhaps it is the product of the ego, which needs to feel unique. Identifying as an individual 'self' is essential in enabling us to navigate and survive in the world of 'form'.
However, If you embrace the idea that we are impermanent and subject to constant change, with no permanent 'self' or form that lives on, then this awakens within us the idea of the formless, which is beyond death. Jesus called it 'eternal life'. It is 'no self', it is the formless one life. The Buddha talked about 'no self' (anattā or anātman) which is that there is no unchanging, permanent self or essence found in any phenomenon.
Death is the transition from Form to Formless and I think can be experienced at any time through the letting go of all concept of 'self'. In so doing, death is seen not as an end, and no longer to be feared. As Eckhart Tolle writes..."The secret of life is to die before you die and find that there is no death."
I think stillness is the path to finding the formless within ourselves.
